Love Within Thy Bosom Burns
We're told in Hebrews 1:9 that God the Father spoke in Psalm 45:6-7 of the Lord Jesus saying, "Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated lawlessness."
Two tremendous affirmations are made by God the Father in this statement concerning Jesus:
Jesus "loves righteousness."
Grab this. If we take the meaning of "righteousness" as Clyde Cranford stated it, "Righteousness is keeping the Law of love from a heart of love," then God is declaring that Jesus loves to love God and to keep (i.e. obey) His righteous laws. I agree.
Jesus "hates lawlessness."
Snag this too. If we take "lawlessness" in a 1 John 3:4 sense, "...sin is lawlessness," then God is declaring that Jesus hates sin.
Put the two together, and what do we get
So, to put the two together, the statement about Jesus from the Psalms is being quoted by the author of Hebrews as the voice of God the Father spoken to God the Son, declaring that the Son (1) loves to please the Father, and to that same degree, (2) He equally abhors sin.
What a testimony for the Father to speak of the Son!
My attempt to grab these two tremendous truths in a few lines
In this short poem about Jesus, I've tried to capture the essence of both truths, while keeping them--as Hebrews 1:9 does--exactly parallel in force.
Love within Thy bosom burns
To please the heart of One
And equal to Thy fiery love
Is hate when sin is done.
Oh to be like Jesus!
